Four people were killed on Monday night when an Abood passenger bus collided with a Toyota IST at Bunju Sokoki along Bagamoyo Road in Kinondoni District.
The accident occurred at around 7:40pm on September 7, 2026, as the bus, registration number T 235 EMJ, was travelling from Tegeta towards Bunju before continuing to Tanga.
According to the police, the Yutong bus, owned by Abood Company, collided with a Toyota IST, registration number T 274 ERU, which was being driven by Hamad Mohamed Juma, 37, popularly known as Majid, a resident of Mtoni Mtongani in Dar es Salaam.
The bus was being driven by Christivian Steven Shemuhilu, 38, a resident of Kange, Tanga.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by alleged negligence by the bus driver while overtaking another vehicle without taking adequate precautions to ensure the safety of other road users.
Mr Juma died in the crash alongside Edward Kimanyara, a retired resident of Yombo Dovya in Temeke; Magdalena Manyenga, 45, of Temeke; and Melina Emmanuel Kayoka, 42, of Yombo Kisiwani in Temeke.
The bodies were taken to Mwananyamala Hospital in Kinondoni for preservation.
Police said Mr Shemuhilu was being held for further legal procedures as investigations into the accident continued.
The police urged motorists and other road users to observe traffic laws and safety regulations, particularly when overtaking, to reduce road crashes and prevent loss of life.
The latest crash comes amid continued calls for motorists to exercise greater caution on busy roads, where unsafe overtaking and other forms of dangerous driving can have fatal consequences.
