Boxing fans in Tanga and surrounding areas have been urged to turn out in large numbers as the National Boxing Club Championships get underway in the city today.
The championships bring together boxing clubs competing for national honours, while also providing an important platform for identifying and developing emerging talent.
Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT) Secretary-General Makore Mashaga said preparations for the tournament had been completed, with participating clubs verified and the competition schedule finalised.
He said the federation was confident that the groundwork had been laid for a well-organised and competitive tournament.
“The preparations have been conducted professionally, and we are confident that every club has prepared well and will achieve what it set out to accomplish,” Mashaga said.
He said the main objective of the championships was to determine Tanzania’s best boxing club, while giving the technical team an opportunity to assess boxers and identify promising talent for future development.
Mashaga urged residents of Tanga and boxing enthusiasts from neighbouring areas to attend the bouts and give the athletes their support.
The tournament is expected to provide boxers with valuable competitive experience while giving fans an opportunity to watch some of the country’s promising fighters in action.
For the athletes, the championships will be more than a contest for club honours, as strong performances could also help raise their profiles and place them in contention for future national team opportunities.
The BFT official said the federation remained committed to using domestic competitions to strengthen the development of boxing and create more opportunities for talented athletes across the country.
