Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has endorsed Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi as its nominee for the position of Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, setting in motion the constitutional process to fill the vacant post.
CCM Secretary-General Ambassador Dr Asha-Rose Migiro announced the decision on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, following meetings of the party’s organs in Dar es Salaam.
Dr Migiro said the relevant party organs unanimously approved Mr Ndejembi’s name after considering his nomination to succeed former Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi, who recently resigned from the position.
The endorsement means Mr Ndejembi’s nomination will now move to Parliament, where lawmakers are expected to consider and approve his appointment in line with the Constitution.
“After the completion of the party’s internal procedures, the name of Mr Ndejembi will be submitted to Parliament for approval in accordance with the Constitution,” Dr Migiro said.
The parliamentary approval will be a key step in completing the process of filling the country’s second-highest constitutional office.
Mr Ndejembi, who currently heads the Ministry of Energy, has been involved in overseeing the government’s energy agenda, including efforts to expand electricity generation and distribution and advance strategic projects in the sector.
His nomination therefore brings the focus to Parliament, where the next stage of the constitutional process will take place.
For citizens, the appointment process is significant as the Vice President works alongside the President in carrying out national duties and, under the Constitution, plays a central role in the functioning of the Union Government.
The nomination follows Dr Nchimbi’s resignation, which created the vacancy and triggered the process now underway to identify and approve a successor.
Once Parliament completes its role, the remaining constitutional procedures will determine the formal assumption of the office by the new Vice President.
