Young Africans SC (Yanga) have set aside TZS 15 billion for player recruitment ahead of the 2026/27 season, underscoring the club's intent to reinforce its squad as it seeks to retain domestic honours and make a deeper run in continental competitions.
The revelation came from a club official, who said the transfer budget was secured through the backing of the club's sponsor, GSM, after consultations with Yanga President Eng. Hersi Said at the start of the transfer window.
"Our president, Eng. Hersi, spoke to our sponsor GSM about the transfer plans for this season. The response was simple: identify the players you need and the funding will be provided," the official said.
He disclosed that Yanga had also pursued another high-profile player in recent days but the move did not materialise despite the club's financial readiness to complete the transfer.
The sizeable investment reflects Yanga's aggressive approach to strengthening the squad following another busy transfer window, in which the club has added several experienced players to increase competition across all departments.
Responding to questions over the club's growing list of attacking options, the official said the expanded squad would give the technical bench greater tactical flexibility rather than create selection headaches.
"There will be matches where we can field Mzize, Shalulile, Mwijage, Toure and Okello together. Some people are wondering how all these forwards will fit into one team, but our objective is to win every match. As the season progresses, people will understand why we built the squad this way," he said.
The club also provided an encouraging update on injured players Clement Mzize and Job, whose initial recovery timelines had pointed to a return in December.
However, the official said both players were progressing faster than expected and could be available as early as October if their rehabilitation continues on schedule.
Meanwhile, Yanga said it will announce the opponent for this year's Mwananchi Day match after the club's General Meeting scheduled for August 2, with the annual event expected to mark the official unveiling of the squad for the new campaign.
The club believes this year's Wiki ya Mwananchi celebrations have gained added significance following its ambitious recruitment drive, giving supporters their first opportunity to watch the new-look team in action at Uhuru Stadium on August 9.
Yanga has introduced three ticket categories for the event. The Royal Ticket, priced at TZS 300,000, includes the club's new season jersey signed by a player of the buyer's choice, return transport from Serena Hotel to Uhuru Stadium and back, as well as refreshments during halftime. VIP tickets will cost TZS 100,000, while Mzunguko tickets have been priced at TZS 20,000.
The club has urged supporters to secure their tickets early, citing limited capacity at Uhuru Stadium and strong demand for what is expected to be one of Yanga's biggest fan events ahead of the 2026/27 season.
