Stakeholders implementing the Dumisha Amani (Sustain Peace) project have announced plans to establish Youth Centres at VETA colleges in Mtwara, Lindi, Songea and Kigoma to help skilled young people secure employment or start their own businesses.

The Dumisha Amani project is being implemented at VETA colleges in Lindi, Mtwara, Songea and Kigoma with support from UNPDF, UNDP Tanzania, CPP and GPF Tanzania. A total of 240 young people are expected to benefit from the programme.

The centres will provide career guidance, entrepreneurship support and assistance in preparing proposals for work equipment required in their respective trades. Successful applicants will receive support to acquire essential tools to launch income-generating ventures.

Speaking during the opening of a training programme at VETA Songea on July 8, 2026, UNDP Project Officer Josephine Sepeku said the initiative aims to strengthen youth economic empowerment while promoting peace and social stability.

"The Youth Centres will help graduates transition into employment and self-employment by equipping them with the resources and support needed to establish sustainable businesses," she said.

Representing Songea District Commissioner, Muhukuru Division Officer Muhammad Maulid Baggo urged the 60 youth participating in the programme to encourage their peers to enrol in VETA institutions and acquire vocational skills that can improve their livelihoods.

He also encouraged beneficiaries to take advantage of the 10 per cent youth loan scheme offered by Songea Municipal Council, noting that the fund provides young people with access to capital for business development.

VETA Senior Curriculum Development Officer Alphoncina Mshana said the training would equip beneficiaries with marketable skills, enabling them to create jobs for themselves and others while serving as ambassadors for peace within their communities.

VETA Songea Principal Rahabu Mwakatundu said trainees will receive instruction in electrical installation, automotive electrical systems, tailoring, plumbing and motor vehicle mechanics.
