The government has stepped up preparations for Tanzania's participation in the 2026 Commonwealth Games by financing key expenses for the national athletics team, signalling renewed efforts to improve the country's competitiveness at major international sporting events.
The National Sports Council (NSC) announced the support during a visit to the team's training camp in Arusha, confirming that it will cover athletes' and coaches' allowances as well as air tickets to Glasgow, Scotland, where the Games will be held from July 23 to August 2.
BMT official Oscar Zabron said the financial backing is intended to allow the athletes to focus entirely on their preparations without logistical concerns.
"The government is committed to ensuring the team participates under the best possible conditions. We have covered allowances for athletes and coaches, as well as their air tickets, so they can concentrate on training and representing Tanzania with pride," Zabron said.
He urged the athletes to make the most of the remaining training period by maintaining discipline, dedication and hard work, expressing confidence that the team has the potential to perform well on the international stage.
Athletics Tanzania (RT) Executive Committee member Andrew Boniface Rhobi welcomed the government's continued investment in the team, describing it as a significant boost to athletes' morale ahead of one of the world's biggest multi-sport events.
He also appealed to Tanzanians and athletics stakeholders to rally behind the team, saying public support would inspire the athletes as they seek to deliver strong performances for the country.
National team head coach Marceline Gwandu said preparations are progressing according to plan, with athletes undergoing intensive training to sharpen their readiness for the Games.
"We are pleased with the progress the athletes have made. The team is working hard, and our goal is to compete at the highest level and produce results that will make Tanzania proud," she said.
Team captain Josephat Gisemo said the government's support had relieved the athletes of financial concerns, enabling them to devote their full attention to training.
"The support has strengthened our confidence and motivation. We are determined to give our best and represent Tanzania with distinction at the Commonwealth Games," Gisemo said.
