Tanzania seeks global capital in UK investment drive

By The Respondents Reporter

Tanzania's Finance Minister, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar, has begun a six-day official visit to the United Kingdom aimed at expanding the country's access to international capital markets and attracting long-term investment to support economic growth.

The visit, which runs from July 21 to 26, will see the minister participate in a series of high-level engagements with global investors, development finance institutions and financial market leaders.

A key event on the agenda is the launch of the first offshore Tanzanian shilling-denominated bond issued by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) on the London Stock Exchange, where Ambassador Omar will officiate as the guest of honour.

The bond is expected to widen Tanzania's investor base by attracting international institutional investors seeking exposure to local currency assets, while providing an additional source of long-term financing for the country's development priorities.

On arrival in London, Ambassador Omar was received by Tanzania's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Mbelwa Kairuki.

He later met officials at the Tanzanian High Commission, where he received a briefing on the mission's activities and discussed the programme for the visit.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the visit is part of broader efforts to position Tanzania more strongly in international financial markets, mobilise long-term capital and strengthen the country's profile as an investment destination in Africa.

The minister is expected to hold meetings with global asset managers, sovereign investors, development finance institutions and commercial banks to present investment opportunities in infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, agriculture, mining and financial services.

He is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with representatives of the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Standard Bank and the London Stock Exchange. Discussions will focus on Tanzania's macroeconomic outlook, implementation of the Tanzania Development Vision 2050 and the Fourth Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP IV), as the government seeks to deepen partnerships that support sustainable economic development.
