The government has allocated Sh1.25 billion to improve healthcare services at Mahenge Hospital in Ulanga District, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare infrastructure under the Sixth Phase Government.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, said the funding, approved by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, will enhance healthcare delivery through the construction of key medical facilities at the district hospital.
Speaking during an inspection tour of development projects in Ulanga on July 4, 2026, Prof. Shemdoe said the government remains committed to expanding access to quality healthcare by investing in modern health infrastructure across the country.
He said the funds will finance the construction of an emergency unit, a maternity ward, a children's clinic and a perimeter fence to improve security for both patients and hospital infrastructure.
"The Sixth Phase Government is continuing to strengthen primary healthcare services by constructing and rehabilitating dispensaries, health centres and district hospitals to ensure Tanzanians receive quality medical care closer to their homes," Prof. Shemdoe said.
He commended President Samia for approving the funds, describing the investment as another demonstration of the government's commitment to improving public health services.
Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Malima said the investment forms part of the government's broader strategy to ensure quality healthcare reaches communities in all parts of the country.
Ulanga Member of Parliament Salim Alaudin welcomed the project, saying the expansion of Mahenge Hospital would significantly ease access to emergency healthcare services for residents.
He noted that many patients from Ulanga had previously been forced to travel to Ifakara Town Council for emergency treatment, leading to delays in receiving care and, in some cases, avoidable deaths.
During the working tour, Prof. Shemdoe also inspected and laid foundation stones for development projects worth more than Sh11 billion, including the Sh2.35 billion Mbuga Bridge project, which will connect the Mwaya, Iputi and Luhumbero road network, improving transport and access to essential services.
