Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba on Monday chaired a meeting of the National Steering Committee overseeing Tanzania's preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as the government stepped up efforts to ensure the country is ready to co-host the continental football showpiece.
The meeting, held at Verde Hotel in Zanzibar, brought together senior government officials, representatives from key ministries, public institutions and leaders from regions that will host the tournament. Zanzibar's Second Vice-President, Hemed Suleiman Abdullah, who co-chairs the committee, also attended.
The Ministry of Health was represented by Deputy Minister Dr. Florence Samizi, standing in for Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa.
The committee reviewed progress on preparations across critical sectors, with discussions focusing on strengthening coordination and implementation to ensure Tanzania delivers the tournament in line with Confederation of African Football (CAF) and international hosting standards.
Health sector preparedness featured prominently during the meeting, with the Ministry of Health outlining ongoing plans to ensure preventive, curative and emergency medical services are in place before the tournament begins.
The ministry is expected to provide comprehensive medical support for players, match officials, visiting delegations and spectators throughout the competition.
Tanzania is co-hosting the 2027 AFCON alongside Kenya and Uganda in what will be the first time the East African neighbours jointly stage Africa's biggest football tournament.
Preparations are underway across infrastructure, transport, security, health and other key sectors as the three countries work towards meeting CAF requirements ahead of the finals.
