Government to equip 300 institutions with clean cooking systems in 2026/27

The Government has announced plans to install clean cooking energy systems in 300 institutions across the country in the 2026/2027 financial year, in a major step toward improving public health, protecting the environment, and modernizing cooking energy use.

The initiative will be implemented with a total of TZS 15 billion from domestic sources, targeting institutions that prepare meals for more than 100 people, including schools, hospitals, and other large service facilities.

The announcement was made by a Clean Cooking Energy expert from the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Omari Khalifa, during the ongoing 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (Sabasaba) at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere grounds.

Mr. Khalifa said the programme is part of Tanzania’s broader national strategy to ensure that 80 percent of the population uses clean cooking energy by 2034.

He said the project will be implemented through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), which will coordinate installation of modern cooking systems in eligible institutions that meet set standards and requirements.

He explained that the systems to be installed include Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), energy-efficient cookstoves, electric cooking solutions, and alternative clean charcoal technologies.

“These systems are designed to reduce reliance on firewood and traditional charcoal, which continue to pose serious health and environmental challenges,” he said.

Mr. Khalifa noted that many institutions still depend on biomass energy, which exposes users to smoke-related diseases and contributes to deforestation.

He said the new programme will help reduce these risks while improving efficiency in institutional cooking.

He added that the implementation will also open opportunities for local and international companies dealing with clean cooking technologies, as REA will announce procurement and participation opportunities during rollout.

REA will also supervise installation to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with national energy standards.

The government emphasized that the initiative is part of ongoing reforms in the energy sector aimed at ensuring reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy for all Tanzanians.

It also aligns with national development goals focused on improving public health, protecting forests, and supporting the transition toward a clean and modern energy economy.
