Ghana has shared its experience in building a successful local content framework in the mining sector, offering Tanzania practical lessons on how stronger legislation, stakeholder collaboration and value addition can increase the participation of local businesses and create more economic benefits for citizens.
Speaking at the Fifth Local Content Compliance Forum (LCCF 2026) in Mwanza, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Policy, Planning, Mineral Titles and Local Content at Ghana's Minerals Commission, Victoria Awuni, said clear laws and well-defined policies had enabled Ghana to expand local participation in the mining value chain.
She said Ghana had introduced a long-term policy framework targeting 2030 to ensure mining activities contribute more to national development by encouraging the processing and value addition of minerals before export.
Awuni acknowledged that only a limited number of mining companies currently process minerals locally, but said the government continues to promote policies aimed at increasing domestic processing to create jobs, develop local industries and retain more value within the country's economy.
She said collaboration between the Minerals Commission, the Ghana Chamber of Mines and other stakeholders had been instrumental in shaping and strengthening local content policies.
According to Awuni, continuous engagement with industry players has helped improve regulations while creating more opportunities for local companies to supply goods and services to the mining industry.
She also highlighted incentives offered to mining companies, including selected tax relief measures and import-related incentives, to support investment and improve the competitiveness of the sector.
In addition, the Ghana Chamber of Mines recognises companies that excel in implementing local content through annual awards, encouraging stronger commitment to supporting local businesses.
The Fifth Local Content Compliance Forum has brought together government officials, mining companies, financial institutions, suppliers and development partners to discuss ways of increasing Tanzanian participation across the mining value chain.
The discussions are expected to help Tanzania strengthen policies that expand business opportunities for local enterprises, promote mineral value addition, create employment and increase the mining sector's contribution to the country's economic growth and citizens' livelihoods.
