The government has intensified efforts to mobilise public support for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with senior leaders using a Parliament sports gala in Dodoma to reinforce the message that Tanzania is ready to co-host the continental tournament.

Minister of Finance, Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar, and his deputy, Engineer Mshamu Ali Munde, joined Members of Parliament, government officials and development partners in the event organised jointly by Parliament and CRDB Bank under the theme “Together for AFCON 2027, Tanzania Is Ready.”

The gala, led by Deputy Speaker Daniel Sillo, started with a symbolic walk from the Parliament grounds to Jamhuri Stadium, bringing together leaders and stakeholders in a show of unity ahead of the tournament that Tanzania will host jointly with Kenya and Uganda.

The event was designed not only to promote healthy lifestyles but also to strengthen national awareness and participation in preparations for AFCON 2027, which is expected to be one of the largest sporting events ever hosted in East Africa.

Participants took part in a range of activities, including football, sprint races, ring games, bao and tug-of-war, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendly competition among leaders, public servants and representatives from the private sector.

The presence of the Finance Minister and his deputy reflected the government's broader commitment to ensuring that Tanzanians from all walks of life are involved in the journey towards hosting the continental football showpiece.

Officials noted that sports continue to play an important role in promoting health, national cohesion and social development.

Beyond recreation, the gala served as a platform for stakeholders to discuss ongoing preparations for the tournament and the opportunities it is expected to create.

AFCON 2027 is projected to boost tourism, stimulate investment, create jobs and strengthen the country’s international profile.

The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration between public institutions and the private sector in delivering a successful tournament that meets international standards.

As preparations gather momentum, participants reiterated the need for collective responsibility, stressing that hosting AFCON 2027 is not only a government undertaking but a national project requiring the support and involvement of all Tanzanians.

Through the theme “Together for AFCON 2027, Tanzania Is Ready,” the gala delivered a strong message of unity and patriotism, while reinforcing confidence that the country is on course to welcome Africa’s biggest football competition and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
