UDSM, Harvard explore AI partnership to boost teaching and research

By The Respondents Reporter

The University of Dar es Salaam has opened strategic discussions with Harvard University on a potential partnership aimed at strengthening the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching, research and data analysis.

The talks were initiated by the university’s Chancellor, former President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, during a recent working visit to the United States, reflecting a growing push by Tanzanian institutions to keep pace with global technological change.

If formalised, the collaboration is expected to focus on building the capacity of UDSM staff and students to use AI tools more effectively in classrooms and research.

It also seeks to enhance the university’s ability to analyse large datasets quickly an area that is becoming increasingly central to academic work worldwide.

The move comes at a time when universities across the globe are grappling with both the opportunities and risks presented by AI.

Analysts say early engagement with leading global institutions could help Tanzania position itself competitively in the evolving digital economy.

During the meeting, Dr Kikwete emphasised the need for responsible adoption of AI, warning that while the technology offers significant benefits, it must be guided by strong ethical standards and proper oversight to maximise its impact.

On the Harvard side, the discussions brought together senior academic leaders and experts, including Jeremy M. Weinstein of the Harvard Kennedy School and Fatema Sumar from the Center for International Development.

A team of AI specialists also took part, led by Sharad Goel, alongside Dan Levy and Teddy Svoronos, bringing experience in applying AI to public policy and data-driven decision-making.

The two sides are expected to continue engagements with a view to formalising cooperation, with Harvard indicating readiness to support UDSM in strengthening its AI capabilities.

For Tanzania, the initiative could mark an important step in modernising higher education by linking local institutions with global expertise and expanding opportunities for innovation and knowledge exchange.
