TRA strengthens ethics through partnership with religious leaders

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has stepped up efforts to strengthen ethics and integrity among its employees through collaboration with religious leaders, a move expected to improve services offered to taxpayers and build greater public trust in the institution.

Chairperson of the Tanzania Reconciliation and Peace Community (JMAT), Sheikh Alhad Mussa Salumu, praised TRA for prioritising ethical values within the authority, describing integrity as a key foundation for efficient public service and responsible tax administration.

Sheikh Salumu made the remarks on May 13, 2026, in Dar es Salaam during a meeting with officials from TRA’s Internal Affairs Department aimed at discussing how religious institutions can support efforts to promote ethical conduct among public servants.

He said cooperation between public institutions and faith-based organisations is important in building a culture of accountability, fairness and discipline in workplaces, particularly in institutions that directly serve citizens.

“Ethics and integrity are essential in strengthening trust between institutions and the public. Religious leaders are ready to support initiatives that encourage responsibility and justice in service delivery,” he said.

Religious leaders who attended the meeting also commended TRA Commissioner General, Yusuph Juma Mwenda, for recognising the role played by religious institutions in promoting moral values, integrity and accountability within society.

They noted that the partnership would help TRA improve its efficiency in serving taxpayers while ensuring that services are delivered in accordance with the law and principles of fairness.

For many taxpayers, improved ethics within public institutions are seen as an important step toward faster, more transparent and more reliable services.

Speaking during the discussions, TRA Ethics Manager, Sospeter Makubi, thanked JMAT leaders for accepting to work closely with TRA in strengthening ethical standards among employees.

Makubi said the cooperation would help increase confidence and trust between TRA and taxpayers, while also supporting the authority’s wider goal of improving public service delivery across the country.

The meeting reflects TRA’s broader commitment to promoting professionalism and accountability as part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving the working environment and enhancing relations with taxpayers.
