Zanzibar targets 5,000 new homes in housing drive

Hussein Ali Mwinyi has announced an ambitious plan by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ) to build 5,000 housing units across Unguja and Pemba over the next five years, in a move aimed at improving living conditions and addressing the growing demand for decent housing.

The houses will be constructed through the Zanzibar Housing Corporation (ZHC), with the government placing renewed emphasis on modern urban housing development as part of its broader social welfare agenda.

Dr Mwinyi, who also serves as CCM Vice-Chairman for Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, unveiled the plan on Tuesday during a special thanksgiving meeting for CCM members in North Pemba following the 2025 General Election. The event was held at Wete Conference Hall in North Pemba.

He said the initiative seeks to replace ageing and unsafe residential structures, some of which were built more than six decades ago shortly after the Zanzibar Revolution.

“The government is determined to ensure citizens live in safe and modern houses,” Dr Mwinyi said, noting that several old buildings now require either major rehabilitation or complete reconstruction.

The housing programme is expected to support Zanzibar’s expanding urban population while improving the quality of life for residents in both Unguja and Pemba.

Beyond housing, Dr Mwinyi used the meeting to rally CCM members to strengthen party unity and deepen ideological commitment within the ruling party.

He called for the revival of party ideology classes and encouraged members to initiate sustainable income-generating projects in districts and regions.

The thanksgiving tour for CCM members following the 2025 General Election officially concluded in Pemba on May 13 after beginning on May 9, 2026.
