The Tanzania national boxing team has intensified preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Boxing Championships set to take place in Scotland from July 23 to August 2 this year.

The squad officially entered residential camp on May 4 at the Police Academy in Kurasini, Dar es Salaam, as the country begins final preparations for the prestigious international tournament.

Speaking to The Respondent Online, Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT), Makore Mashaga said several boxers had already reported to camp and started training under the supervision of the national coaching staff, while others are expected to join next week after completing leave arrangements with their employers.

According to Mashaga, the men’s team currently in camp includes Yusuf Lucas Changalawe, Said Hamisi Kanenda, Hussein Juma Chombe and Maximilian Patrick Oloo.

The women’s squad comprises Zulfa Yusufu Macho, Zawadi Amosi Kutaka, Veronica Thomas Mapunda and Aisha Idd Issa.

He added that Faki Issa Faki and Hassani Selemani Shetui are undergoing special training in Tanga Region under coach Said Jeba and are expected to join the main camp in Dar es Salaam from May 11.

“We started the camp with players based in Dar es Salaam, while others are still processing official leave permits. Those outside the city are continuing with training at their respective clubs before joining the national camp,” Mashaga said.

The BFT official noted that the technical bench is headed by chief coach Samwel Batman Kapungu, assisted by Muhsini Mng’ola, Anthony Kameda, Kasimu Hussein Kasimu and Laurent Mahundi. Saidi Seifu will serve as the team referee during the championship.

Mashaga also appealed to Tanzanians to continue supporting the national boxing team as it seeks to make a strong impression at the Commonwealth Championships.
