Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has reaffirmed its commitment to improving working conditions for staff, saying the dedication of its employees remains central to the university’s achievements in research, teaching, and community service.

Speaking during the International Workers’ Day (May Day) celebrations on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raphael Chibunda, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Planning, Finance and Administration, Prof. Amandus Muhairwa, said the university is determined to address staff concerns while strengthening a more productive and supportive working environment.

He said management has taken seriously the views, challenges, and proposals raised by employees, noting that they will be handled through formal institutional mechanisms to ensure lasting solutions.

Prof. Muhairwa added that SUA is continuing to improve access to working tools by strengthening procurement systems and working with reliable suppliers to ensure timely delivery of quality services that meet institutional needs.

He acknowledged the challenge of limited office space at the university, explaining that it has been driven by a steady increase in staff recruitment.

According to him, SUA has recruited 263 employees over the past six years, while 125 staff members have retired, creating pressure on existing infrastructure.

He further emphasized the importance of discipline, teamwork, and accountability in the workplace, urging staff to uphold mutual respect regardless of rank, guided by a culture where both senior and junior employees value each other.

Earlier, workers’ union leaders at SUA, including the Chairman of the RAAWU branch, Mr. Faraja Kamendu, and the Chairman of the THTU branch, Dr. Nickson Mkiramweni, presented staff concerns, highlighting various workplace challenges while stressing the need for unity and cooperation.

The union leaders expressed confidence in the university management’s willingness to address the issues raised and encouraged employees to join trade unions as a way of strengthening the protection of their rights and welfare.
