Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, today joined thousands of workers in Njombe Region to mark International Workers’ Day (May Day), a national event dedicated to recognising the contribution of workers to the country’s development.

The national celebrations were graced by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, as the guest of honour.

Speaking during the event, Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba called on workers across the country to remain patient, committed, and focused in their duties, saying hard work and perseverance are key to achieving both personal success and national development goals.

He said the government continues to value the role of workers in building the economy and implementing Tanzania’s long-term development agenda.

He encouraged workers to maintain discipline and avoid discouragement, even when facing challenges in the workplace.

“Workers are the backbone of national development. Your dedication is what drives progress in our country,” he said.

Dr. Mwigulu also urged employers in both public and private sectors to ensure they create positive and fair working environments where employees feel respected and valued.

He said good working conditions help improve productivity, strengthen cooperation, and promote stability in workplaces.

He added that when workers are treated with dignity, they become more motivated and productive, which benefits both institutions and the nation at large.

The Prime Minister further emphasized the importance of strong cooperation between employers and employees, saying constructive dialogue remains essential in addressing challenges facing the labour sector.

He noted that industrial peace is a key foundation for sustainable development and the success of Tanzania’s national development vision.

This year’s May Day celebrations were held under the theme: “Decent Work is a Strong Pillar for Sustainable Development in the Implementation of the National Vision 2050.”

The event brought together government leaders, trade union representatives, employers, and workers from various sectors, who gathered to reflect on progress made in improving labour rights and working conditions, as well as the challenges that still need attention.

The celebrations featured speeches, cultural performances, and messages of unity, highlighting the importance of workers in driving Tanzania’s social and economic transformation.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s participation as guest of honour highlighted the government’s continued commitment to improving workers’ welfare and promoting decent work across all sectors of the economy.
