The Government has allocated Sh58 billion to improve road infrastructure in both rural and urban areas of Mufindi District in Iringa Region, as part of its broader strategy to enhance connectivity in key agricultural zones, particularly those producing tea and forestry products.

The announcement was made on May 2, 2026, by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba during his working tour of Iringa Region, where he inspected several development projects.

Among them was the 14-kilometre Mtili–Ifwagi road, which has been constructed to tarmac level at a cost exceeding Sh21 billion.

The Sh58 billion investment has already begun transforming the district by improving transport links and accelerating socio-economic development for residents of Mufindi.

The upgraded road network is expected to ease the movement of goods and services, especially in areas with high agricultural output.

Dr Nchemba emphasized that roads in Iringa Region are critical to the national economy due to the region’s strong production capacity. He stressed that such infrastructure projects must be completed without delay.

In that regard, he directed the Manager of the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency to expedite the design of the remaining 44 kilometres of roads and ensure all procedures are completed promptly so that the projects can be included in the implementation pipeline.

To ensure value for money and timely delivery, the Prime Minister issued firm instructions to TARURA officials and consultants to intensify their efforts.

He assured them that the Government is ready to mobilize funds immediately once the design reports are finalized, enabling construction to begin without delay.

“Iringa Region and its districts are production hubs. These are economic roads that support productivity. Complete them quickly, even if it means working day and night,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister in the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), Festo Dugange, noted that the road budget for Mufindi District has been increasing steadily each year.

For the 2026/27 financial year, the budget has risen to approximately Sh4.4 billion, up from Sh3.5 billion in the previous year.

He said the increased funding aims to fully address long-standing road challenges affecting residents in Mufindi North and South constituencies, ultimately improving accessibility and supporting economic growth in the area.
