Efforts by the Sixth Phase Government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan to strengthen Tanzania’s tourism industry are beginning to show strong results, with rising visitor numbers and increased earnings from the sector.

Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba told Parliament in Dodoma that the government’s strategic investments and reforms in the natural resources and tourism sector have significantly contributed to the growth of tourism in the country.

Presenting his budget speech on government revenue performance, priorities and expenditure estimates for the Prime Minister’s Office and the Office of Parliament for the 2026/27 financial year, Dr Nchemba said the government continues to prioritise tourism because of its major contribution to economic growth, employment and national income.

He said the government has implemented several strategies aimed at strengthening the sector and positioning Tanzania as a leading global tourism destination.

As a result of these efforts, the number of tourists visiting national parks increased by 10.73 per cent, rising from 5,360,247 visitors in 2024 to 5,935,561 visitors in 2025.

Tourism earnings also recorded notable growth, increasing from $3.9 billion in 2024 to $4.4 billion by December 2025, equivalent to a 12.82 per cent rise.

The Prime Minister said the increase reflects the success of the government’s policies to promote tourism, improve conservation efforts and expand tourism infrastructure.

The remarks were made during the Third Meeting of the 13th Parliament in Dodoma, attended by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Ashatu Kijaji.

Dr Nchemba said the government also recognises President Samia’s role in promoting the tourism sector and strengthening conservation initiatives.

He noted that on January 31, 2026, President Samia was honoured with the Visionary Leadership Award during the Serengeti Awards ceremony in recognition of her contribution to the development of the natural resources and tourism sector.

The Prime Minister said the government will continue implementing policies that promote sustainable tourism, protect natural resources and increase the sector’s contribution to the national economy.

Tourism remains one of Tanzania’s key sources of foreign exchange and an important driver of employment and community development across the country.
