TRA launches new system to boost cooking oil trade from Zanzibar

By The Respondents Reporter

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has taken steps to implement a new system for importing cooking oil from Zanzibar to Mainland Tanzania, aiming to streamline trade and enhance revenue collection.

TRA Commissioner General, Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, said the authority has already started by forming a small expert committee comprising officials from the Ministry of Agriculture through the Tanzania Cereals and Other Produce Board, customs officers, and oil importers. The committee’s role is to design an operational framework for the new import system.

“This new system will facilitate trade between Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, while stimulating business at Bagamoyo, Mbweni, and Kunduchi ports, which are the main entry points for cooking oil,” said Mr. Mwenda.

He added that importers will enjoy incentives under the new arrangement, enabling them to make profits while ensuring the government collects taxes and protecting local industries.

Commissioner General Mwenda also warned that any trader involved in smuggling after the system is operational will face strict legal action in accordance with the law.

In addition, TRA will continue providing tax education to the public and promote fair business practices by ensuring all eligible taxpayers meet their obligations.

The Chairman of the Zanzibar House of Representatives Budget Committee, Hon. Ali Suleiman Ameir, commended TRA for its professionalism and pledged continued collaboration in raising public awareness on the importance of tax compliance.
