Coca-Cola has partnered with IUCN and the government, through the Wami-Ruvu Basin Water Board, to launch a TZS 5 billion project aimed at protecting water sources in the Ngerengere catchment area of Morogoro region.

The initiative, called NBS4WATER, seeks to restore degraded environments, strengthen water resource management, and improve the livelihoods of communities surrounding the basin.

Speaking during the launch in Morogoro town, Coca-Cola General Manager, David Chait, said the investment aims to expand access to safe water, including for residents of Dar es Salaam.

“The Wami-Ruvu Basin is a critical resource for economic and social activities. Protecting its water sources is essential for the well-being of communities and the environment,” he said.

IUCN Project Manager, Doyi Mazenzele, highlighted that more than 2,000 farmers will benefit from training in climate-smart agriculture. “The project will restore over 3,000 hectares of land and conserve approximately 548 million liters of water,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Water Permanent Secretary, Assistant Director Rosemary Rwegubisa said the government has banned all human activities within 60 meters of water sources. “We have introduced alternatives such as tree planting, beekeeping, and well digging to support communities while protecting these critical resources,” she said.

Acting Director of the Basin, Juvenalis Tarimo, urged local communities to actively participate in conserving the basin, stressing that over 2,000 people are expected to benefit from the initiative.

Alfred Olajide, Deputy President of Coca-Cola East and Central Africa, said the project is part of the company’s global efforts to address water scarcity and promote sustainable water management.

The launch coincided with a tree-planting exercise along Mindu Dam in Morogoro town, symbolizing the project’s commitment to environmental restoration and community empowerment.
