TRA Kagera steps up fight against smuggling

By The Respondents Reporter

The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has intensified efforts to combat smuggling along Ngara District’s border areas by handing over two vehicles to the district office.

The vehicles, received by TRA District Manager Victor Kibasa, are expected to strengthen patrols and enforcement operations against illegal trade.

Ngara District Commissioner, Colonel Mathias Kahabi, said the vehicles will significantly improve access to remote border areas where smuggling has been persistent.

He noted that this move will not only curb illicit trade but also boost government revenue collection.

“These vehicles are a key step in tackling smuggling networks and increasing operational efficiency,” Colonel Kahabi said. He also emphasized the need for continued coordination between TRA and other government agencies to fully address economic crimes.

TRA Kagera Regional Manager, CPA Joseph Mtalemwa, explained that many unofficial routes are used by traders to move goods without paying taxes. The new vehicles will enhance monitoring and enforcement along these high-risk routes.

CPA Mtalemwa added that TRA remains committed to strategic measures, including improving operational resources, educating taxpayers, and partnering with stakeholders to safeguard government revenue and strengthen tax collection systems.

The handover ceremony underscores the government’s determination to fight smuggling, a challenge that threatens Tanzania’s economic growth and national development.
