Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) has urged women to take full advantage of training and academic programs offered at the university to enhance their skills and contribute effectively to community development.

The call was made by the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Planning, Finance, and Administration, Prof. Amandus Muhairwa, during a special event celebrating International Women’s Day at the university.

Prof. Muhairwa noted that SUA has established a strong system to protect women and girls, backed by a strategic plan to uphold gender rights.

“These measures have created a safe and supportive environment, enabling women to thrive academically and professionally,” he said.

Faraja Kamendu, Chairperson of the Staff Association for Higher Education, Science, Technology, Technical Skills, Information, and Research (RAAWU) at SUA, and Nickson Mkilamwene, Chairperson of the University Staff Association (THTU) at SUA, emphasized that empowering women in the workplace improves overall institutional performance.

They encouraged women to work diligently, participate in staff unions, and safeguard their rights while contributing to the growth and development of SUA.

Speaking on behalf of female staff, Farida Mkongwe thanked university management for prioritizing women’s training. She said the programs have strengthened women’s skills, competence, and professionalism in their roles.

“We urge the management to expand these opportunities further, empowering women across academic and administrative fields,” she added.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Adam Malima, speaking at the regional International Women’s Day celebrations held at Fulwe Primary School grounds, applauded the region for leading in women’s economic empowerment. He said this recognition highlights women’s vital role in community development.

Malima condemned the tolerance of harassment against women by some government officials, particularly when women lose their spouses. He stressed that strict action must be taken to protect women’s rights.
