The Parliamentary Public Investments Committee (PIC) has postponed its inspection of housing projects implemented by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) in Dar es Salaam following the death of Isimani Member of Parliament, William Vangimembe Lukuvi.
The committee, chaired by Masanja Kadogosa, received the news while already on a working tour to inspect NHC development projects in the city.
Before the announcement of the death, the committee had completed its inspection of the Samia Housing Scheme Phase One located at Tanganyika Packers area in Kawe.
The project consists of 10-storey residential buildings with a total of 560 housing units. The development has already been completed, with some buyers having moved into the apartments while others have rented them out.
However, the committee did not proceed with the planned inspection of the 7/11 housing project in Kawe after learning about the death of the senior government leader.
Addressing members of the committee, Kadogosa said parliamentary procedures require committees to suspend their activities once the death of a Member of Parliament is announced.
He explained that although the committee was undertaking its official duties, the news of the death of a fellow legislator and former minister required them to halt the inspection tour.
Kadogosa said the visit had therefore been postponed to allow members to observe the mourning period, noting that the committee is part of Parliament and must follow parliamentary traditions in such circumstances.
The committee also suspended all meetings scheduled for the day and said Members of Parliament would later be guided on the next steps regarding the bereavement.
Members of the committee conveyed their condolences to the family of the late Lukuvi, relatives, friends and residents of Isimani constituency for losing a leader who served the area and the country for many years.
Meanwhile, the National Housing Corporation also expressed deep sorrow following the death of the veteran leader.
NHC Director General Hamad Abdallah said the corporation received the news with great sadness while hosting the parliamentary committee during the project inspection.
He said the corporation extends condolences to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Speaker of Parliament and the family of the deceased for the loss of a dedicated leader who served the country with commitment.
Abdallah noted that Lukuvi previously served as Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, where he oversaw a number of development initiatives in the housing sector, including the 7/11 housing project that the committee had planned to inspect.
He said the country has lost a visionary leader who contributed significantly to the development of the housing and urban development sector.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, Lukuvi died at around 7:00 a.m. while receiving treatment at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital after suffering a heart attack.
