The National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) is set to spotlight the economic and environmental potential of waste during this year’s International Waste Day, slated for March 30, 2026, at Mnazi Mmoja Grounds.

The week-long celebrations, starting March 28, will feature exhibitions demonstrating innovative products made from waste, highlighting how discarded materials can be transformed into valuable resources.

Speaking to the media, NEMC Legal Compliance Manager, Mr. Hamadi Taimuru, said the initiative aims to raise public awareness on reducing waste while educating citizens and stakeholders on investment opportunities in waste collection, recycling, and processing.

“We call on all citizens and stakeholders to join us from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Mnazi Mmoja Grounds to learn and witness how waste can become a profitable venture,” Mr. Taimuru said.

He added that the event promotes the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, in line with legal requirements, to ensure cleaner environments, improved public health, and sustainable resource use for national development.

The international theme for this year’s celebrations, “Reduce Food Waste in the Food Sector,” addresses the global challenge of food loss, which contributes roughly 10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

At the national level, the slogan “Waste is an Opportunity” reinforces that waste is not just refuse but a source of raw materials for creating new products, underscoring its potential for boosting innovation and investment.
