Morogoro RC urges proper use of mosquito nets in TZS 19 billion malaria fight

The Tanzanian government has set aside TZS 19 billion to boost the fight against malaria, with TZS 15 billion earmarked for insecticide purchases at the Kibaha factory for distribution across all 184 councils. The funding covers the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 financial years.

The announcement was made in Morogoro during the launch of a mosquito net distribution campaign targeting seven councils with the highest malaria prevalence.

Stella Kajenge, Malaria Coordinator and Pest Controller from the Prime Minister’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), said that TZS 4 billion of the funds has been used to purchase insecticide spraying pumps to be deployed nationwide.

Kajenge highlighted that the Ministry of Health, together with TAMISEMI, has issued a national malaria control guideline involving multiple sectors, noting that activities such as farming, livestock keeping, and construction can create mosquito breeding grounds.

Hassan Ibrahim, Logistics Director at the Medical Stores Department (MSD), recalled that during 2019/2020, over 16 million mosquito nets were successfully distributed across 50 councils in 10 regions, using electronic systems to ensure efficiency. In Morogoro alone, 30 vehicles were deployed to speed up distribution.

Adam Malima, Regional Commissioner of Morogoro and guest of honor, announced that 1,686,933 mosquito nets will be distributed free of charge across 165 wards, 656 villages, and 1,047 distribution points in the region’s seven councils.

Malima urged residents to use the nets as intended, warning against misuse such as using them for poultry farming or fish drying.

“Proper use of mosquito nets is a critical weapon in our fight against malaria. Every citizen must take responsibility to protect themselves,” he said.
