Prime Minister Dkt. Mwigulu Nchemba has laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new power substation at Mkata in Tanga region, a project designed to enhance electricity supply in the area.

The substation will have a capacity of 2X60MVA 132/33kV and will include the construction of a 33kV transmission line spanning 45 kilometers from Mkata to Kwamsisi village.

The project is fully funded by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, with TZS 44.14 billion allocated for the substation and TZS 5.75 billion for the transmission line.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dkt. Mchemba highlighted that the project is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the National Grid and improve electricity availability in Handeni and Kilindi districts, as well as to support power supply to the graphite mines in Kwamsisi.

“This project will facilitate electricity distribution, support industrial and agricultural development in the region, and contribute to the overall performance of the national grid,” the Prime Minister said.

The Mkata substation project is among several government initiatives aimed at expanding and modernizing Tanzania’s power infrastructure to ensure reliable electricity for households, businesses, and industrial activities across the country.
