The Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, has called on Tanzanian meat exporters to establish a strong union that will enable them to conduct business efficiently and compete effectively in international markets.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting at Gerwill Hotel in Dodoma, Dr. Bashiru emphasized that a unified body would streamline communication with the government and help address challenges facing the sector.

He also stressed the importance of sustainable business practices to ensure a steady supply of raw materials for processing industries.

“In today’s modern economy, competition is fierce. You are competing with countries that have invested in this sector for decades. There is no shortcut. I encourage this meeting to be the foundation for forming a strong union of meat exporters, which will facilitate engagement with the government,” Dr. Bashiru said.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in charge of the Livestock Sector, Dr. Fabian Madele, representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, said the government continues to implement the national livestock vaccination program, improve slaughterhouses, and promote modern farming practices to increase the value of the meat industry.

The Acting Registrar of the Tanzania Meat Board, Mr. John Chassama, reported that from July 1, 2025, to January 30, 2026, Tanzania exported 9,325.8 tonnes of meat, generating USD 39.46 million in revenue.

Meat exporters also highlighted challenges they face, including policy, legal, transport, and capital issues, and called on the government and financial institutions to collaborate in developing the sector.
