The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labour, Employment and Relations, Deus Clement Sangu, on February 19, 2026 paid an official visit to the headquarters of the Tanzania Reconciliation and Peace Council (JMAT) in Dar es Salaam, where he met the council’s leadership to formally introduce a new Relations coordination mandate assigned to his office.
Minister Sangu was received by JMAT Chairperson Dr Alhad Mussa Salum and members of the council.
The visit was aimed at strengthening cooperation between the government and faith-based institutions, particularly in advancing dialogue, reconciliation and social cohesion.
Speaking during the meeting, Mr Sangu commended JMAT for its contribution to promoting peace, unity and national cohesion through reconciliation initiatives.
He said the council has remained an important pillar in fostering moral values, tolerance and harmonious relations among followers of different faiths, efforts he noted have played a key role in sustaining peace and national stability.
The minister stressed the need for continued collaboration between the government and religious institutions in addressing social, economic and political challenges facing the country, including issues related to moral upbringing, social values and peaceful coexistence.
He assured the council that the Sixth Phase Government under Samia Suluhu Hassan will continue to work closely with JMAT and other institutions to promote peace, unity and inclusive development.
He added that the newly established coordination role on Relations is intended to enhance structured engagement between the government and key societal actors in order to strengthen dialogue and mutual understanding.
In response, JMAT Chairperson Dr Salum welcomed the minister and praised the government for recognising the importance of relations and dialogue by assigning a specific ministerial mandate to oversee the area.
He thanked the government for acknowledging the council’s contribution and pledged continued cooperation with state institutions in efforts to safeguard peace, national unity and social harmony.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration in support of reconciliation initiatives and the maintenance of lasting peace in the country.
