Katavi Regional Commissioner, Mwanamvua Mrindoko, has directed all stakeholders involved in marine transport and activities related to watercraft operations in the region to strictly adhere to the laws and regulations enforced by the Tanzania Shipping Agency Corporation (TASAC).
Mrindoko issued the directive today, February 27, 2026, during a meeting with TASAC officials stationed in Katavi.
The meeting focused on raising awareness and monitoring safety measures for marine transport along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in the Katavi and Rukwa regions.
The Regional Commissioner emphasized that all watercraft engaged in economic activities on the Katavi side of Lake Tanganyika must be properly registered in accordance with the law.
He also stressed the importance of using safety equipment throughout all journeys and operating vessels in full compliance with license conditions.
“I call upon owners and operators of passenger and cargo transport vessels to strictly observe the terms of their licenses, control overloading, operate vessels according to weather conditions, and ensure regular inspections of their boats,” Mrindoko stated.
TASAC Public Relations Manager, Mr. Saidi Mkabakuli, expressed gratitude to the Regional Commissioner and assured continued collaboration with the Regional Commissioner's Office and local authorities to strengthen management, inspections, and education among stakeholders, aiming to reduce accidents and improve the efficiency of marine transport services.
While in Katavi, TASAC officials reminded operators that compliance with regulations is not optional but a legal obligation designed to protect lives and promote economic development in areas that depend on marine transport.
Speaking during an awareness campaign in the Kirando and Ikola areas along Lake Tanganyika, TASAC Officer for Rukwa and Katavi, Captain Optatus Kalolela, highlighted that challenges still exist due to negligence and non-compliance with legal standards, which can lead to accidents and serious consequences for both people and property.
