President Samia condoles families of victims in Morogoro road crash

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed deep sorrow following a fatal road accident in Morogoro Region that claimed the lives of 10 people, urging drivers and all road users to strictly observe traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies.

In a statement released by the Directorate of Presidential Communications (Ikulu) on January 2, 2026, the President conveyed her condolences over the accident, which occurred on December 31, 2025, at Maseyu Village in Gwata Ward, Morogoro District, along the Morogoro–Dar es Salaam highway.

The accident involved a head-on collision between a passenger bus, a Mitsubishi Fuso with registration number T 1662 DMD owned by Bil Mawio, which was travelling from Morogoro to Tanga, and a HOWO truck with registration number T 956 ELW belonging to Kikori. Both vehicles caught fire after the impact.

Police reports indicate that all the 10 people who died were passengers on the bus. The deceased included two women and eight men. 

A total of 23 people were injured and taken to Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Of these, 11 have been treated and discharged, while 12 remain admitted and are receiving medical care.

Authorities said nine bodies are being kept at Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital, while one body is at Mikese Health Centre. 

Five of the victims have been identified, while identification of the remaining five has been delayed due to severe burns. DNA samples have been taken by experts to assist in the identification process.

President Samia conveyed her condolences to the Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Mr Adam Kighoma Malima, and extended her sympathies to the bereaved families. She also wished a quick recovery to those injured in the accident.

The President called on drivers and all road users to adhere to road safety laws and regulations, stressing that negligence and recklessness on the roads continue to cost innocent lives.Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
