Major General Patrick Sawala, Regional Commissioner of Mtwara, today held talks with the Minister of Agriculture, Daniel Chongolo, focusing on the region’s food security and agricultural development.
According to a statement from the Mtwara regional office, Major General Sawala reported that the region currently enjoys a surplus of food, reflecting improved food security.
He urged residents to embrace mixed farming, including food crops, to ensure that income from cash crops such as cashew nuts is channeled into local development initiatives rather than being spent on purchasing food.
“This approach will not only enhance household food security but also support broader regional development,” Major General Sawala said.
The meeting marked Minister Chongolo’s first official visit to Mtwara since his appointment by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening agricultural productivity and sustainable development in the region.
