The Vice President of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Mpango, has called on Tanzanians to continue praying for the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, asking that he may rest in peace and be counted among the saints.
Dr. Mpango made the appeal while joining leaders, faithful, and citizens at a memorial service held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Parish in Mwanjelwa, Mbeya Region, marking 26 years since Mwalimu Nyerere’s passing.
He urged leaders and citizens alike to follow the exemplary life of Mwalimu Nyerere, who devoted his life to Tanzania and consistently prioritized the nation’s welfare.
On behalf of the government, the Vice President thanked the people of Mbeya for attending the memorial.
The service was led by Archbishop of Mbeya Archdiocese, Most Rev. Gervas Nyaisonga, who highlighted Mwalimu Nyerere’s integrity, humility, compassion, and dedication to justice.
Archbishop Nyaisonga recalled the late leader’s political legacy, including his role in achieving independence, fostering national unity, and promoting democratic reforms.
He also praised Mwalimu Nyerere’s social and economic contributions through the 1967 Arusha Declaration, which aimed to build a fair and equitable society.
The Archbishop noted that Mwalimu Nyerere championed education, promoted Swahili, upheld moral values, and always placed national interests above personal gain.
Archbishop Nyaisonga called on Tanzanians to continue praying for Mwalimu Nyerere, seeking forgiveness for any shortcomings and asking for him to be blessed.
The memorial was also attended by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Tulia Ackson, Cabinet Ministers, and other government officials.
