In a strong promise to Zanzibar’s elders, the ACT Wazalendo presidential candidate has pledged that his government, if elected, will review and reform the civil servants’ pension system to ensure retirees receive dignity, respect, and their full rights in recognition of their years of service.
Speaking to elders in Kiwani Constituency, Mkoani District, Pemba Island, the candidate described the current situation for retirees as “distressing,” noting that many have been neglected, ignored, and left to struggle despite years of loyal service.
“Retirees have served the nation with dedication and patriotism, yet today they are undervalued. Our government will ensure that every retiree receives the respect and recognition they deserve, and that their hard work benefits them and their families,” he said.
He criticized the current social security system, particularly the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF), saying it has become more of a burden than a support mechanism.
“The ZSSF, in its current form, has lost its meaning for retirees. Instead of helping them, it has become a tool of exploitation. The current payout formulas do not reflect the real cost of living,” he added.
The candidate promised that an ACT Wazalendo government would review all regulations, payout systems, and procedures related to pensions to restore trust among public servants approaching retirement.
He pledged that retirees would be directly involved in decisions affecting their welfare, and that a fair, timely, and transparent payment system would be established, reflecting the actual contributions of each individual.
“Retirees are a vital pillar of the nation. Our government will not allow any elder to struggle for what is rightfully theirs. Their rights, dignity, and respect must be protected at all costs,” he said.
Elders in Kiwani welcomed the pledge, saying it reflects the candidate’s genuine commitment to reforms and concern for citizens, especially the elderly.
They noted that retirees have long endured delays and neglect in receiving their rightful benefits.
The elders promised their strong support to the ACT Wazalendo candidate in the upcoming general elections, expressing their desire to see a government that values fairness, dignity, and the welfare of all retirees in Zanzibar.
