Tanzania has actively participated in the “Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women” held in Beijing, China, showcasing the country’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The delegation was led by Vickness Mayao, Registrar of Non-Governmental Organizations, from the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups.
Mayao said Tanzania joined the meeting to both learn from international experiences and share its own strategies for advancing women’s rights.
“We discussed successes and challenges faced by countries in achieving gender equality and empowering women since the Beijing Platform for Action was adopted in 1995,” he said.
Juliana Kibonde, Assistant Director for Women at the Ministry, said the conference, organized by China’s All-China Women’s Federation in partnership with UN Women, offered countries a platform to exchange experiences, celebrate achievements, and address remaining challenges in promoting gender equality.
“The meeting marked 30 years since the 1995 Beijing Conference. Countries reviewed progress on the 12 key goals they had committed to, identified gaps, and discussed actionable steps to create a world where women are empowered and gender equality is realized,” Kibonde explained.
The summit was officially opened by China’s President, Xi Jinping, and attended by heads of state, ministers, ambassadors from over 110 countries, UN officials, and representatives of international organizations.
Over 800 participants engaged in discussions under the theme: “Shared Future: A New and Simplified Approach to Inclusive Development for Women.”
Tanzania’s participation underscores its ongoing dedication to advancing women’s rights and creating opportunities for all citizens to thrive equally.
