The government has allocated TZS 5.2 billion through the Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) in the 2025/26 financial year for the improvement of road infrastructure in Mbinga District, Ruvuma Region.

Mbinga District Commissioner Kisare Makori said the ongoing road projects have significantly boosted the transport of farm produce and improved the livelihoods of residents in both district councils.

“Mbinga is one of the country’s food baskets, producing large quantities of both food and cash crops due to the fertile soil. We are grateful to the Sixth-Phase Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for continuing to support us through TARURA,” he said.

Mr Makori added that Mbinga’s hilly terrain and valleys made farming and transportation challenging before government intervention.

“Without these infrastructure investments, farmers would have struggled to reach production areas. The government’s efforts have changed that,” he explained.

He urged TARURA to continue installing streetlights in other parts of the town to enhance safety and improve the urban appearance, saying the initiative had already transformed Mbinga’s night-time environment.

“I also call upon residents to protect the existing roads and public infrastructure. This is a long-term investment that must be preserved for future generations,” he said.

Speaking on the TACTIC Project, Mr Makori revealed that Mbinga has received three key projects — the construction of 6 kilometres of tarmac roads, a modern bus terminal in Lusaka Ward, and a new marketplace.

“For years, Mbinga has lacked modern facilities that match its growing status. The TACTIC Project will bring a major transformation in the provision of services and stimulate local trade,” he said.

Residents have also expressed satisfaction with the installation of streetlights, which they say has enhanced security and extended business hours.

Adrian Frank, a resident of Masumuni Ward, said TARURA’s work had made a visible difference.

“There used to be dust and mud everywhere, but now the roads are clean and well-lit. People can move freely even at night,” he said.

Another resident, Christina Mapunda from Mji Mwema, commended the government, saying night-time theft and shop break-ins had decreased significantly.

“We can now operate our businesses until late at night without fear. The lights have given us safety and peace of mind,” she said.
