Government encourages egg and milk consumption among Tanga Students

As part of this year’s World Food Day celebrations in Tanga, the government, through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, in collaboration with the dairy and poultry sectors, has launched a campaign to promote the consumption of eggs and milk among children.

The initiative reached schools for children with special needs in Tanga city, where the products were distributed directly to the students.

Ms. Mary Yongolo, the Ministry’s representative, said the campaign aims to instill healthy eating habits from an early age, ensuring that children grow into a strong, healthy workforce for the nation.

“This year’s World Food Day theme, ‘Together for Nutritious Lives Today and Tomorrow,’ reminds us that a child’s healthy future begins in childhood.

Visiting these young learners today is part of our commitment to making nutritious food accessible and appreciated by all,” Ms. Yongolo said.

Regional Nutrition Officer Ms. Sakina Mustapha highlighted the health benefits of eggs and milk. She explained that milk is rich in protein and essential minerals that strengthen bones, while eggs contain vitamins, minerals, and natural fats crucial for growth and brain development.

“Milk also helps children stay hydrated, while eggs contribute to overall physical and cognitive growth. Including these foods in daily meals ensures our children are healthy, active, and ready to learn,” she added.

The campaign is part of an annual government effort during World Food Day to boost the consumption of livestock and fishery products, which are vital sources of protein for human health.

By reaching out to schools and children with special needs, the initiative ensures that no child is left behind in accessing nutritious foods.
