Oryx Gas introduces clean cooking energy to Dar es Salaam School

By Our Reporter

Yusuf Makamba Secondary School in Dar es Salaam is now cooking clean, thanks to a new energy-efficient stove installed by Oryx Gas Tanzania in partnership with Tanzania Communities Rise Foundation (TCRF).

The move aims to eliminate the school’s reliance on charcoal, improving health and reducing environmental impact for its 1,391 students.

Speaking at the launch on September 19, 2025, Oryx Gas Marketing and Sales Manager, Shaban Fundi, said the initiative aligns with President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s agenda to promote clean energy, especially in institutions with large populations.

“This clean cooking system will benefit over a thousand students who rely on school meals daily. Previously, the smoke from charcoal posed health risks to students, teachers, and cooks alike. With this initiative, we demonstrate Oryx Gas’s commitment to providing safe, environmentally friendly energy solutions,” Fundi said.

Fundi also noted that similar systems have been installed at Kiluvya Secondary School and highlighted that Oryx Gas provides nationwide access to its products, meeting both national and international quality standards.

TCRF Director and Founder, Sarah Ngoma, explained the decision to partner with Oryx Gas was based on the company’s leadership in the LPG market and its ability to reach communities across Tanzania.

“Oryx is a trusted brand, even in rural areas where its red LPG cylinders are easily accessible. Our mission is to replace harmful energy sources with clean alternatives,” Ngoma said.

She added that TCRF has identified over 10 schools for potential clean energy projects but prioritized Yusuf Makamba Secondary School due to its central location and high charcoal consumption.

“The impact of this project extends beyond the school, reaching the surrounding community as well,” Ngoma said.

The school’s Headteacher, Kanne Kibangali, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its benefits in improving daily operations.

“Preparing meals for over a thousand students used to take long hours. With the new Oryx Gas stove, food can be cooked faster, ensuring students eat on time and return promptly to class,” he said.

This partnership reflects growing efforts in Tanzania to embrace clean energy, protect the environment, and safeguard public health, especially in institutions with large gatherings.
