Tanzania’s national football team, Taifa Stars, has secured a total of Sh200 million in rewards after winning all three of their opening matches in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
The Stars began their winning streak with a triumph over Burkina Faso, earning Sh60 million. They followed up with a victory against Mauritania worth Sh55 million, before sealing a 2–1 win over Madagascar, which brought in an additional Sh85 million.
The funds, provided as incentives, came from the “Goli la Mama” initiative, the Office of the Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, and contributions from local business leaders. The rewards aim to boost player morale and sustain the team’s strong form in the tournament.
On August 9, 2025, Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma, presented Sh20 million from the “Goli la Mama” pledge after the win against Madagascar.
The ministry matched the contribution with another Sh20 million, also delivered by Mwinjuma. Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila handed over Sh20 million, while prominent sports stakeholder Azzim Dewji pledged Sh25 million to the team.
Taifa Stars have now made history by advancing to the quarterfinals of CHAN for the first time. Should they reach the semifinals, they are set to receive an additional Sh200 million, as earlier promised.
A place in the final would earn them Sh5 billion, while winning the championship would bring in Sh1 billion—a reward pledged by President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.
