Tanzania’s national women’s football team, Twiga Stars, will be without three key players in their opening match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Mali, set to take place tomorrow in Morocco.

Head Coach Bakari Shime confirmed the absence of striker Aisha Masaka due to injury, while team captain Opah Clement and midfielder Christer Bahera will miss the match due to suspension after accumulating yellow cards in the qualifiers.

Speaking ahead of the crucial tie, Coach Shime said the team remains focused despite the setback and is determined to start the tournament on a high note.

“We’re heading into this match without three important players, but we are well-prepared and ready to fight with everything we have,” he said. “The players are motivated, and we are going all out for victory.”

Coach Shime highlighted that the team has played several friendly matches in recent weeks, which have helped identify and address tactical weaknesses.

“We’ve worked on key areas of improvement, and the players have responded positively. I believe we are in a strong position to compete,” he added.

He also urged Tanzanians to support the team spiritually as they represent the nation on the continental stage.

“I call upon all Tanzanians, wherever they are, to keep us in their prayers. We believe those prayers will reach us, and we promise to give our best,” he said.

The match against Mali is expected to be a tough test for the Twiga Stars, who are aiming to progress beyond the group stage and make a statement in this year’s competition.
