The Government of Tanzania has reaffirmed its strong commitment to prioritizing the mining sector, with a special focus on strategic and high-value minerals, as part of a broader plan to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and increase the country’s contribution to the national economy.

Speaking during the official opening of the Pan-African Geoscience Conference (PanAfGeo) in Dar es Salaam, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Minerals, Msafiri Mbibo, said Tanzania is positioning itself as a key player in the global transition to clean and green energy through increased exploration and value addition of critical minerals.

“The government has put in place a clear roadmap to expand geoscientific research and unlock the country’s full mineral potential,” said Mr. Mbibo.

“Our target is to ensure at least 50 percent of the country is covered by geophysical surveys by 2030.”he added

He said Tanzania will continue investing in the establishment of value addition industries to process strategic minerals such as graphite, nickel, lithium, and copper  minerals that are increasingly important in manufacturing electric vehicles, batteries, and other clean energy technologies.

According to Mr. Mbibo, the government is also scaling up international partnerships to build local technical capacity and attract sustainable investment in the sector.

“We are working closely with international institutions including the European Union to equip our geologists with advanced skills and knowledge,” he noted.

He emphasized that such collaborations are essential for strengthening the entire geoscience value chain, from exploration to processing, while also opening up new frontiers for investment both in Tanzania and across Africa.

The PanAfGeo conference brings together experts, government officials, and investors from across Africa and Europe, with the goal of enhancing cooperation in the sustainable development of the continent’s mineral resources.

Mr. Mbibo said Tanzania’s active participation in such forums reflects the country’s ambition to become a regional leader in responsible mineral development, while ensuring that the benefits are felt by Tanzanians through job creation, skills transfer, and increased national revenue.
