Offenders undermining government efforts in Kilombero game reserve to face stern action: Dunstan Kyobya

 By Beatus Maganja.

Kilombero District Commissioner,  Advocate Dunstan Kyobya, has issued a stern warning against individuals attempting to undermine government efforts to conserve the Kilombero Game Reserve.

The reserve plays a critical role in protecting water sources, forests, and wildlife, particularly ensuring water availability for the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project, a key national development initiative.

Speaking on January 3, 2024, in Kilombero, Kyobya condemned deceptive practices by individuals who lure residents into illegal farming and grazing activities within the reserve.

He also highlighted the fraudulent sale of land within protected areas as a growing concern.

“Some individuals are misleading residents into believing that reserve areas are open for farming and grazing. Let me be clear—human activities are strictly prohibited in protected areas unless expressly permitted by law,” he stated.

“Moreover, there are cases of fraudsters selling land within the reserve. I urge the District Police Commander and the district security committee to closely monitor these activities. Those found misleading, defrauding, or exploiting residents will face swift and decisive legal action,” he added.

Hon. Kyobya also urged district leaders to strengthen security within the reserve and establish clear mechanisms for assisting residents relocating from the area.

He specifically mentioned border communities such as Mofu, Idete, Mawala, Chombe, and Mgeta, emphasizing the need for careful management to prevent further encroachment.

Other areas highlighted include Chita, Kalengakyelu, Chisano, Ching’anda, Mlimba, and Utengule. Ho Kyobya appealed to all stakeholders to uphold the vision and goodwill of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, ensuring the reserve remains protected from misuse.

Mlimba District Council Director, Jamal Idrisa Abdul, expressed gratitude to President Hassan for upgrading the status of the Kilombero Game Reserve.

He underscored the council’s commitment, alongside the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), to restore and protect the reserve's natural integrity.

“Our priority is to eliminate human activities within the reserve and ensure its preservation for future generations,” said Abdul.

Kilombero Game Reserve Commander Bigilamungu Kagoma reported that since the reserve's elevation in status, TAWA has undertaken extensive efforts to demarcate boundaries.

To date, over 1,100 markers have been installed, making the reserve's borders clear and recognizable to surrounding communities.

The government’s proactive measures aim to safeguard this vital ecosystem while addressing the challenges posed by encroachment and fraudulent activities.
