Dodoma: The Ministry of Minerals met with the U.S.-based company Prediction
Software Incorporated to discuss the adoption of advanced digital technology to
improve the mining trade in Tanzania. The meeting took place on July 24, 2024,
at the Ministry's offices in the Government City of Mtumba, Dodoma.
Gene Chandler, President of Prediction
Software Inc., presented the Mineral Trading Management System, known as Gold
Tracker. This innovative technology aims to streamline and regulate the trade
of precious metals, particularly gold. Chandler highlighted that the system
includes features for issuing licenses, collecting royalties, and managing
taxes related to the mining industry. He emphasized that the Gold Tracker,
along with XRF Precious Metal Analyzers, enables accurate and timely tax
collection while protecting the environment and national resources.
"This system is designed to
combat illegal mining activities and ensure that all dues are collected
accurately and promptly," Chandler noted, adding that the technology has
already proven successful in several countries, including the United States,
Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
Dr. Abdulrahman Mwanga, the
Commissioner of Minerals, acknowledged that Tanzania faces challenges in
managing its gold trade, and that the new system from Prediction Software Inc.
could significantly benefit the mining sector. "We need a robust system
that can track mining activities and prevent revenue losses due to illegal
mining operations," Dr. Mwanga added.
During the meeting, participants
discussed the advantages and potential challenges of implementing the Gold
Tracker and XRF Precious Metal Analyzers. They agreed on the importance of a
thorough assessment by the Ministry's experts to determine the feasibility and
effectiveness of the system in Tanzania.
The session concluded with a consensus that further evaluation is necessary before any decisions are made. This step is crucial as the government seeks to enhance the management of the mining sector using modern technology, thereby increasing national revenues and safeguarding the country's resources.
The Tanzanian government continues to
collaborate with both local and international stakeholders to ensure that the
mining sector meets global standards and is operated transparently and
responsibly. The adoption of advanced technology is expected to revolutionize
the management of mining activities, contributing to the country's economic
growth.
In a broader context, this initiative aligns with Tanzania's vision to modernize its industries and improve governance within critical sectors. The government's proactive stance on integrating technology into resource management demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development and economic resilience. As Tanzania looks to the future, the successful implementation of such technologies could set a precedent for other resource-rich nations in Africa.
