In a significant development, four
individuals, including the Chairman of Kwazoka Village, are now in custody in
the Pwani Region following allegations of spreading false information about
child kidnappings.
The group is accused of fabricating
and sharing misleading content on social media, which claimed that a Noah
vehicle was involved in abducting children across various areas, including the
reported kidnapping of two primary school students from Vigwaza.
Pwani Region Police Commander Pius
Lutumo announced on July 24, 2024, that the incident took place in Vigwaza
Kwazoka within the Chalinze Police District. The suspects reportedly recorded
and circulated a video asserting that the vehicle was responsible for recent
child abductions. This video quickly went viral, reaching Mtongani Primary
School in Mlandizi and triggering widespread panic among parents, teachers, and
students.
Commander Lutumo emphasized that an
investigation revealed the claims to be unfounded. He condemned the rapid
spread of this false information, which had sown fear and confusion within the
community. The police are taking a firm stance against such actions,
underscoring that those responsible will face legal consequences.
This incident highlights a growing
concern in Tanzania over misinformation related to kidnapping, exacerbated by a
series of genuine disappearances. The spread of false news often stems from
anxious and frustrated parents, amplifying fears and leading to misinformation
circulating widely on social media. The Pwani Region Police are committed to
addressing and curbing such dangerous practices to prevent further public
distress and uphold the truth.
