Mbinga. The government has urged farmers in Mbinga District, Ruvuma Region to embrace efficient fertilizers usage, with a view to scaling up production.
The recommendation was made here in Mbinga on Tuesday (July 23) by the Deputy Minister for Energy, Hon. Judith Kapinga during the official launch of the campaign dubbed: ‘Kilimo ni Mbolea’.
Delivering her keynote address during the launch of the campaign which is meant to emphasise the importance of adopting efficient fertilizer usage, Hon. Judith said effective use of fertilizers will lead to the improvement in soil fertility, production and income.
“Fertilizers provide appropriate nutrients which ensure healthy growth of plants, thus maximizing yields,” she underscored.
She went further to insist: “A better use of fertilizers is needed for food security, boosting farmers’ income and shaping the Gross National Product (GDP).”
Going by the official data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the agriculture sector absorbed 65.6 percent of the country’s labour force last year and contributed 26.5 percent of the GDP.
Further, the sector accounted for 65 percent of the raw materials for manufacturing industries and 100 percent of food security.
