In a landmark development
announced today, July 11th, 2024, 42 disability groups in Zanzibar are
experiencing profound economic transformation through the iSAVE KIJALUBA
initiative.
This collaborative effort, led
by the Tanzania Media Women's Association Zanzibar (Tamwa ZNZ) and the
Federation of Disabled People's Organizations Zanzibar (Shijuwaza), with
support from the Norwegian Association of Disabled (NAD), marks a significant
milestone in local empowerment.
During its first year, these
groups collectively amassed Sh143,077,862, demonstrating their commitment to
financial independence. This funding, comprising shares, community
contributions, and management fee profits, underscores their determination to
overcome economic barriers.
Among the 1,186 members, 811 are individuals
with disabilities, with women comprising 422 of them, challenging societal
norms and promoting gender equity in economic activities.
The project not only focuses on
financial gains but also emphasizes comprehensive skills development.
Members have received training in business
management, savings strategies, and various product manufacturing such as soap
and handicrafts. These skills not only enhance economic opportunities but also
foster self-sufficiency among participants.
Maryam Said, treasurer of the
"Tukiwezeshwa Tunaweza" group, shared her journey: "We started
small, but with determination, we doubled our share value to Sh 2,000, ensuring
sustainable growth." Such success stories highlight the project's impact
in empowering marginalized communities.
Beyond financial gains, these
groups serve as pillars of resilience in times of crisis, supporting education,
household needs, and community welfare. Dr. Mzuri Issa, Director of Tamwa ZNZ,
emphasized the broader societal impact: "These groups are transforming
lives. They exemplify resilience and community spirit, proving that disability
is not a barrier to success."
The
ongoing success of the iSAVE KIJALUBA project in Zanzibar represents a
transformative journey in economic development, serving as a powerful symbol of
inclusivity.
