Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has left Tanzania for Rome, Italy, where he will represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan at an international summit focusing on One Health, food systems and agriculture.
Dr Nchemba departed on Saturday, September 19, 2026, ahead of the three-day meeting scheduled to take place from September 21 to 23 at the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
The summit will bring together government leaders, including between five and seven heads of state, 30 to 50 ministers, regional and international institutions, development partners, private sector representatives, research institutions and international organisations.
The meeting will focus on strengthening the implementation of the One Health approach, which recognises the links between human, animal and plant health and the environment.
The approach is intended to support more sustainable food and agricultural systems while improving countries’ ability to prevent and manage health and environmental risks.
Among the key issues on the agenda is how governments can integrate One Health principles into policies and investments in food and agriculture systems.
Participants will also discuss ways to strengthen cooperation among the agriculture, environment, health, finance and urban planning sectors.
The summit is also expected to examine the role of innovation, science and local knowledge in preventing risks, monitoring resources and promoting their sustainable management.
Another focus will be mobilising investment and strengthening partnerships to turn commitments on One Health into practical actions with measurable results.
For Tanzania, the discussions are expected to provide an opportunity to share its experience and engage with international partners on approaches that link public health, agriculture, food security and environmental sustainability.
