Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has expressed condolences to former Zanzibar President Aman Abeid Karume following the death of his mother, Fatma Karume.
Ms Karume, wife of Zanzibar’s first President, the late Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume, died on Monday, September 21, 2026.
In a condolence message issued by the Zanzibar State House, Dr Mwinyi said he had received the death of Ms Karume with deep sadness, extending his condolences to Mr Karume, his family, relatives and friends.
He described the late Ms Karume as a significant figure in Zanzibar and Tanzania’s history, having been the wife of the islands’ first president.
“President Dr Mwinyi has received this news with great sadness and extends his condolences to the family of the late Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume and all citizens who have lost a parent in this tragedy,” the statement said.
Dr Mwinyi prayed for God to grant Ms Karume eternal rest and give the bereaved family strength and patience as they mourn her death.
The condolence message was signed by Raqey Mohammed, Acting Executive Director of the Zanzibar State House.
