Tanzania will host the 46th meeting of the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA) in Arusha from October 5 to 9, bringing together tax officials from 48 countries to discuss ways of improving revenue collection and tax administration.
Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) Deputy Commissioner General Mcha Hassan Mcha said yesterday the meeting would provide an opportunity for countries to exchange experience and share strategies for making tax systems more efficient.
He said Tanzania would also use the meeting to learn from approaches adopted by other Commonwealth countries as governments seek to strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation.
“This is an important opportunity for Tanzania to strengthen international cooperation in tax administration, exchange experience and learn modern strategies for improving efficiency in revenue collection,” Mr Mcha told journalists in Dar es Salaam.
The meeting is expected to bring together senior tax administrators to discuss challenges facing revenue authorities and possible approaches to improving tax compliance and administration.
For Tanzania, Mr Mcha said, hosting the meeting would also provide an opportunity to showcase the country's capacity to host international conferences while supporting the tourism and business sectors.
The arrival of delegates from 48 countries is expected to generate business activity in Arusha, a major tourism and conference destination, while giving Tanzania greater visibility in international tax administration discussions.
Mr Mcha said the meeting would further strengthen Tanzania's engagement in global discussions on taxation and its contribution to economic development.
The meeting comes at a time when governments are placing greater emphasis on domestic revenue mobilisation to finance public services and development programmes while improving the efficiency and fairness of tax administration.
TRA said it would work with the media to provide information on CATA 2026 and the opportunities associated with the meeting, including efforts to improve public understanding of tax administration and promote transparency.
